Restoring incorrectly detected files
FAQ » Virus FAQ » Restoring incorrectly detected files
If AVG has detected some file incorrectly and a new virus database which repairs this issue has been released, files in AVG Virus Vault are automatically rescanned. Incorrectly detected files are then automatically restored in their original location.
However, it may happen that AVG is not permitted to restore a file correctly:
a) File is restored with "_AVG_RESTORED" suffix
In order to prevent deleting important files from your computer, AVG does not replace existing files. If AVG detects a file with identical name in the original location, it will create a copy of the restored file with a suffix "_AVG_RESTORED". This may happen for example if you have reinstalled the respective application. However, in some situations the affected application may also hold (lock) the file, so that the original filename cannot be used; computer restart is recommended in such situations.
If you have restored the original file for example by reinstalling, and the affected application is working correctly, you can safely delete the redundant file with the "_AVG_RESTORED" suffix. If the file with original filename is missing, simply delete the "_AVG_RESTORED" suffix to renew the file functionality (application or computer restart may be needed).
b) Restoring a file triggers "ACCESS DENIED" error
If you attempt to restore a file from AVG Virus Vault manually, you may encounter the "ACCESS DENIED" error. This means that for some reason, AVG does not have sufficient permissions for saving the file in the selected location. This may happen for example when the affected application was not finished correctly.
To resolve this situation, please restart your computer as the first step, and then attempt to restore the file again. Should the issue persist, please select a different location (use the "Restore As" button) for restoring the file, and copy it in its original location manually.
