4406 - Disabling AVG Free temporarily

The Resident Shield, part of Anti-Virus component, is the main component protecting you from viruses. It scans accessed files and if a virus is found, the access to the file is blocked. This applies to executing infected programs, as well as to opening of infected documents or any other files.
Disabling of the Resident Shield is sometimes recommended before installation of a new software or drivers, since it can prevent conflicts that would otherwise occur during their installation. This however applies only to limited number of specific programs and drivers, and there is no general reason why AVG Resident Shield should interfere with an installation of any application.
To disable the Resident Shield, please:

• Open the AVG program.
• Click on the Anti-Virus component.
• Un-tick the option Enable Resident Shield.
• Save the changes.

Please do not forget to activate the Resident Shield again once you performed the tasks requiring its deactivation.

 

The AVG E-mail Protection may affect your sending/receiving of e-mails, since it is designed to scan the messages and needs to access them in some way. The way of accessing the messages depends on your e-mail client, but only the Personal E-mail Scanner plugin can interfere with the communication between your computer and the e-mail server.
To disable the Personal E-mail Scanner (if it is installed), please:

• Open the AVG program.
• In menu Tools select Advanced settings.
• Go to Email Protection - E-mail Scanner - Servers - POP3, and click on the POP3 server (usually AutoPOP3:10110).
• Un-tick the option Activate this server and use it for sending/receiving e-mails.
• Repeat the same for SMTP and IMAP servers.

Please enable the servers that were enabled originally again when possible.

 

The LinkScanner component provides protection against websites, that are designed to install malware into your computer via the web browser or its plugins. The LinkScanner consists of two features, AVG Search-Shield and AVG Surf-Shield.
To disable the LinkScanner, please:

• Open the AVG program.
• Click on the LinkScanner.
• Un-tick the option Enable Search-Shield and Enable Surf-Shield.
• Save the changes.

Please do not forget to activate the LinkScanner again once you performed the tasks requiring its deactivation.

 

The AVG Identity Protection component protects you from all kinds of malware like Spyware, Bots, Identity Theft using behavioral technologies. It also provides zero day protection for new viruses. Identity Protection verifies the behavior of applications and if there is suspicious action detected (this means e.g. when file copies itself to system folder, writes data into another files and creates registry entries, gathers important data and saves them to a specific file or uploads them to the Internet...), you will get notified.
To disable the Identity Protection, please:

1. open the AVG program
2. Click on the Identity Protection
3. un-tick the option "Activate Identity Protection"
4. save the changes

Please do not forget to activate the Identity Protection again once you performed the tasks requiring its deactivation.

If you want to switch all protections level off at once:

1. Open the AVG Program.
2. On the Tools menu, click Advanced settings.
3. Click Temporarily disable AVG protection in the menu on the left side.
4. Select the Temporarily disable AVG protection check box, and then click OK.
5. Choose how long you want the protection to be disabled and then click OK.

Or:

1. Right-click the AVG icon in the system tray next to the clock.
2. Click Temporarily disable AVG protection.
3. Choose how long you want the protection to be disabled and then click OK.
